والإمام محمد الجواد عليه السلام هو محمد بن علي بن موسى بن جعفر، المعروف بـالجواد أو جواد الأئمة، تاسع أئمة أهل البيت عند الشيعة الإثني عشرية، حيث استمرت إمامته 17 سنة. ولد في المدينة المنورة .
واستشهد في بغداد، وله 25 سنة على يد المعتصم العباسي؛ وعليه كان أقل أئمة أهل البيت (ع) سِنّاً حينما استشهد، ودفن في حرم الكاظمية إلى جوار قبر جدّه موسى بن جعفر (ع).
