أبو عبد الله جعفر بن محمد الصادق، (ولد يوم 17 ربيع الأول 80 هـ في المدينة المنورة وتوفي فيها في مساء 25 شوال من سنة 148 هـ)، إمام من أئمة المسلمين وعالم جليل وعابد فاضل من ذرية الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب وله مكانة جليلة عظيمة لدى جميع المسلمين.
لُقِبَ بالصادق لأنه لم يُعرف عنه الكذب، ويعتبر الإمام السادس لدى الشيعة الإثنا عشرية والإسماعيلية، وينسب إليه انتشار مدرستهم الفقهية والكلامية.
ولذلك تُسمّى الشيعة الإمامية بالجعفرية أيضاً، بينما يرى أهل السنة والجماعة أن علم الإمام جعفر ومدرسته أساسٌ لكل طوائف المسلمين دون القول بإمامته بنصٍ من الله، وروى عنه كثير من كتَّاب الحديث السنة والشيعة على حدٍ سواء، وقد استطاع أن يؤسس في عصره مدرسة فقهية، فتتلمذ على يده العديد من العلماء. ومن الجدير بالذِكر أن جعفر الصادق يُعتبر واحداً من أكثر الشخصيات تبجيلاً عند أتباع الطريقة النقشبندية، وهي إحدى الطرق الصوفيَّة السنيَّة.
