'Abdurrahman bin Muhammad bin 'Umar bin 'Ali bin Yusuf bin Ahmad bin 'Umar ad-
Diba`iy asy-Syaibani al-Yamani az-Zabidi asy-Syafi`I al-Hasani (yang dikenal dengan
sebutan Ibn ad-Daiba’I, ad-Daiba’ dalam bahasa Sudan artinya putih, yang merupakan
julukan kakeknya, Ibnu Yusuf). Beliau dilahirkan pada hari ke-4 bulan Muharram tahun
866 H dan wafat hari Jumat 12 Rajab tahun 944 H (jadi, usia beliau sekitar 76 tahun).
Beliau adalah seorang ulama hadits yang terkenal dan tidak ada bandingnya pada
masa hayatnya. Beliau mengajar kitab Shohih Imam al-Bukhari lebih dari 100 kali
khatam. Beliau mencapai derajat Hafidz dalam ilmu hadits, yaitu seorang yang
menghafal 100,000 hadits lengkap dengan sanadnya. Setiap hari beliau mengajar hadits
dari masjid ke masjid. Di antara guru-gurunya ialah Imam al-Hafiz as-Sakhawi, Imam
Ibnu Ziyad, Imam Jamaluddin Muhammad bin Ismail, mufti Zabid, Imam al-Hafiz Tahir
bin Husain al-Ahdal dan banyak lagi. Selain itu, beliau juga seorang muarrikh, yakni ahli
sejarah yang terkenal. Beberapa di antara sekian banyak kitab karangannya ialah:
Taisirul Wusul ila Jaami`il Usul min Haditsir Rasul; kitab yang mengandung
himpunan hadits yang dinukil dari kitab hadits yang 6.
Tamyeezu at-Thoyyib min al-Khabith mimma Yaduru 'ala Alsinatin Naasi minal
Hadits; sebuah kitab yang membedakan hadits sahih dengan yang lainnya (seperti
dhaif dan maudhu).
Qurratul 'Uyun fi Akhbaril Yaman al-Maimun.
Bughyatul Mustafid fi akhbar madinat Zabid.
Fadhail Ahl al-Yaman.
Beliau seorang yang jujur, lemah lembut tutur katanya dan indah bahasanya.
Dalam bidang fiqh, beliau bermadzhab Syafi’i. dan banyak hal yang bisa dijadikan bukti
bahwa beliau adalah termasuk golongan Ahlussunnah Waljama’ah (Sunni), salah
satunya adalah kecintaan dan penghormatannya kepada Rasulullah saw., Ahlul Bayt,
serta para Shahabat Rasulillah.
