شیخ عباس قمی خود می‌گوید مفاتیح را به انگیزه اصلاح کتاب مِفتاح الجنان نوشته است که در آن زمان رایج و دعاهای بدون سندی در آن بوده است: «برادران دینی از من خواسته‌اند که دعاهای سنددار کتاب مفتاح الجنان را جدا نموده به همراه سایر دعاهای معتبر بنویسم».
