State Health Society is constituted merging the health societies for leprosy, tuberculosis, blindness control, and integrated disease control program.The rising popularity of AI in ophthalmology is fuelled by the ever-increasing clinical big data that can be used for algorithm development. A cataract is one of the leading causes of visual impairment in Tamilnadu. NHM is continuously working with the NGOs for early detection of cataracts and bring the patients to the Government hospitals for surgery and eventually avoiding permanent blindness.
To accelerate screening the patients NHM in collaboration with TNeGA developed an AI-based Android mobile application that will identify Cataract and classify them into Mature Cataract, Immature Cataract, No Cataract, and IOL. Labeled data is provided by NHM and TNeGA used the same for training. The accuracy level of screening and identification of cataracts is high with the current data used for training.
