وماذا يفعل سليم ؟ وسط هذه العادات والتقاليد التي لا يسمح بغيرها في اجواء الصعيد وتاتي بطلة الرواية وهي وجد سالم عتمان وهي طبيبة في بلدتهم التي تعيش فيها تبلع من العمر اربعة وعشرون عام كانت تحب سليم الهواري فكان هو حب عمرها لمدة عشرة سنوات ومنذ ان كانوا صغار ولكن حدثت مشاكل بين ابيها وعمه ادي ذلك الي قتل عمه لابيها وفر هاربا الي القاهرة واصبح هناك تار بين العائلتين واصبحت وجد محرمة علي سليم كان سليم يحب وجد كثيرا فكانت هي روحه التي يعيش بها وكل العالم يعلم ذلك ولكن ابيه وامه واولاد عمه حذروه من الاقتراب منها لان اصبح هناك تار بينهم واصبحت وجد كذلك.
