Dong-hae was born in Mokpo, Jeollanam on October 15, 1986. Initially aspiring to become an athlete, Dong-hae then decided to become a singer due to the encouragement of his father who wanted his son to become a singer.

In 2001, Dong-hae successfully signed a contract with SM Entertainment after winning the Best Outward Appearance award with Sungmin at the SM Youth Best Concert. Under SM Entertainment, Dong-hae received training in singing, dancing, and acting in the same year. He was then recruited into Boyband Smile, which consisted of five young men, with Leeteuk. Smile failed in the middle of the road.

In 2004, Dong-hae was recruited to become a member of Super Junior along with eleven other trainees. The group became known as Super Junior05, the first generation of Super Junior. A few days before the group's debut, Dong-hae appeared briefly on the show There Is There Isn't on SBS.
