Sebagian besar dari surat-surat tersebut, yaitu sebanyak 34 surat, merupakan surat Makkiyyah, yaitu surat yang turun sebelum Rasulullah hijrah ke Madinah. Sedang tiga surat selebihnya, yakni al-Bayyinah, az-Zalzalah dan an-Nashr merupakan surat Madaniyyah, yaitu surat yang turun setelah Rasulullah Sholallahu Alaihi Wassalam hijrah ke Madinah.
