Description

RootDim was formerly known as SuperDim. RootDim requires root privileges on your device.

RootDim has been largely superceded by our ScreenDim, which does not require root (though it also has an enhanced root mode, which on some newer devices may work more reliably than RootDim) and has useful features like presets in the notification area.

RootDim lets you dim LCD screens (and a few OLED ones) to very low levels--lower than the OS normally allows (that's why you need root privileges)--to save night vision. This will be particularly useful for serious amateur astronomers.

On some devices you can also turn off LEDs (e.g., power LED).

If you have ChainFire3D, RootDim will let you conveniently control the nightmode settings together with the brightness settings.

You can save up to five profiles that can be restored with a single touch in the RootDim screen. The profiles include LCD backlight brightness and nightmode settings (if applicable). Long touch on profile button to save, short touch to load.

You can also create launcher shortcuts for particular saved profiles and for cycling through all the profiles.

If RootDim doesn't work on your device, email me at arpruss@gmail.com before leaving a low rating. Maybe I can fix it.

Note 1: Some devices don't allow going below the minimum value allowed by the OS. There is really nothing I can do about that.

Note 2: There is a special feature for some Archos 70/101 devices that have a firmware problem that prevents them from waking up properly when they've been put to sleep with a low brightness (this problem occurs even if you don't have SuperDim). Go to Menu|Options and choose that option if you have one of these devices, and it should fix the problem.

Note 3: For all the users who would like a widget, please remember the launcher shortcut feature.

Questions & Answers

Q: What is an APK File?

A: Just like Windows (PC) systems use an .exe file for installing software, Android does the same. An APK file is the file format used for installing software on the Android operating system.

Q: If I install an APK from this website, will I be able to update the app from the Play Store?

A: Yes, absolutely. The Play Store installs APKs it downloads from Google's servers, and sideloading from a site like ApkClean.net goes through a very similar process, except you're the one performing the downloading and initiating the installation (sideloading).
As soon as the Play Store finds a version of the app newer than the one you've sideloaded, it will commence an update.

Q: Why ApkClean.net can guarantee APK 100% safe?

A: Whenever someone wants to download an APK file from ApkClean.net, we'll check the corresponding APK file on Google Play and allow user download it directly (of course, we'll cache it on our server). If the APK file does not exist on Google Play, we'll search it in our cache.

Q: What are Android App permissions?

A: Apps require access to certain systems within your device. When you install an application, you are notified of all of the permissions required to run that application.

User's Reivew

1 ★Stupid and full of bugs. Touching widgets turns screen completely black and launches menus that can't be seen. Enabled and disabled randomly when switching apps. Pretty stupid that app is disabled each time I open my browser. Isn't the purpose of this app to make reading more comfortable by lowering the brightness level? This was my 2nd time trying this app and the problems still haven't been fixed. This app sucks donkey balls.
4 ★Always defaults to my lowest night setting forcing me to have to re-select which profile I want. I also have them locked so they should stay, who knows.
5 ★This app help you save more battery than usual. It just not lower the brightness of your phone but it also lower the battery consumption of the screen . I think. So it help save more battery... :D
1 ★Basically I installed this just to see how low the brightness could get. When I found out it couldn't get lower than the system settings, I uninstalled the app, but the apps brightness settings were now my system settings. The brightness literally increased exponentially at the touch of my finger. By mistake I increased to max and it was so bright the screen started to get hot quickly and the screen began to flicker. This is dangerous. You should give the ability to restore stock system settings.
5 ★Thank you for this application. Not being able to turn off my hardware key lights after changing to cm10.2 was just getting on my nerves. Thanks again.
4 ★Seem to work well but doesn't lock so I have to restart after rebooting. Minor inconvenience but maybe this can be resolved in future update!
1 ★Developer should make a list of devices this won't allow dimming past stock minimum. Absolutely no difference between 1 and 30 - 255. Stop wasting users time when you know this doesn't work with certain devices. GIVE US A LIST OF BROKEN DEVICES!
3 ★I'm on a nook tablet dual booting cm 7. I love the ability to go below default brightness. It works really well at night. The problem is the lock. I use the nook app which has its own brightness. I tried to lock it at around 10 to read at night. The problem is that when I lock it, it reboots the tablet into stock os when I put it to sleep.
4 ★My screen is almost always too bright. The fine control over brightness this app gives me is very useful. I have had no problems with this being malicious, so I'd say it's safe to give root. Props to dev for alerting the user of the screenlock bug on Nooks.
5 ★The Samsung Galaxy S2 has an annoying feature: when the battery gets quite low, the phone forcibly makes the screen really dim to extend battery life. Note: this is nothing to do with the auto screen brightness seting or power saving settings- none of those make a difference once the battery gets low. This app is the only solution I've found. It allowed me to set whatever brightness I wanted, even when the battery is almost empty.
1 ★Doesn't work in my Chinese tablet. On my HTC phone, it messed up my brightness settings after I uninstalled this item. Now it stay at full brightness regardlessly.
5 ★When battery is at 5% on my Note 4, screen dims so badly that I cannot see anything and I cannot rise the brightness either. This app will let me rise brightness during this low battery situation.
