في علم التصوير الفتوغرافي ظهر مصطلح الفيلم الوثائقي سنة 1920 كفن حديث ولو ان معالمه لم تتشكل بعد, اضافة الى بداية استعماله في عدد من الكتابات والافلام خلال الفترة بين 1920 و 1930
