The National Institute of Ayurveda was established on 7-2-1976 by the Government of India as an apex Institute of Ayurveda in the country to develop high standard of teaching, training and research in all aspects of Ayurvedic System of Medicine with a scientific approach.The Institute is engaged in Teaching, Clinical, Teaching and Research at Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Ph.D. level and is affiliated to Rajasthan Ayurveda University, Jodhpur. Admission to UG Course of BAMS is done on the basis of an All India Entrance Test conducted by the University. Admission to PG Course is made on the basis of an All India Joint PG Entrance Test conducted by NIA and IPGTRA(alternatively).
The Institute has a Governing Body consisting of 16 Members and Presided over by Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. There is a Standing Finance Committee Chaired by Joint Secretary, Department of AYUSH, Government of India. There is also an Institutional Ethics Committee to govern, regulate and review various research proposals in the Institute. This is constituted on the Guidelines stipulated by ICMR in its Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research on Human Subjects. The Committee was reconstituted in June 2010
