الحُسين بن علي بن أبي طالب (3 شعبان 4 هـ - 10 محرم 61 هـ / 8 يناير 626 م - 10 أكتوبر 680 م) هو سبط الرسول محمد، والإمام الثالث عند الشيعة، أطلق عليه النبي محمد لقب سيد شباب أهل الجنة فقال: «الحسَنَ والحُسَيْنَ سيِّدا شبابِ أَهْلِ الجنَّةِ»، وهو خامس أصحاب الكساء. كنيته أبو عبد الله.ولد في المدينة، ونشأ في بيت النبوة، شارك في معارك الجمل وصفين والنهروان التي خاضها مع أبيه علي بن أبي طالب وخضع لإمامة أخيه الحسن بن علي، والتزم ببنود الصلح مع معاوية بن أبي سفيان، إلاّ أنّه بعد موت معاوية وأخذ البيعة لابنه يزيد بن معاوية خلافاً بمعاهدة الصلح، ابى الحسين عن مبايعته، ورحل إلى مكة في جماعة من أصحابه، فأقام فيها أشهرا، ودعاه إلى الكوفة أشياعه فيها، على أن يبايعوه بالخلافة، وكتبوا إليه أنهم في جيش متهيئ للوثوب على الأمويين. فأجابهم، وخرج من مكة مع مواليه ونسائه وذراريه ونحو الثمانين من رجاله، ابن عباس ينشده الله والرحم ألا يخرج الحسين فحدثه ابن عباس بذلك ولكن الحسين رفض ولما وصل الحسين إلى العراق أرسل أمير الكوفة والبصرة عبيد الله بن زياد جيشاً اعترضه في كربلاء فنشب قتال عنيف أصيب الحسين فيه بجروح شديدة، وسقط عن فرسه، فقطع راسه شمر بن ذي الجوشن، وأرسل رأسه ونساءه وأطفاله إلى دمشق.
دفن جسده في كربلاء. وبحسب مرويَّات الشيعة، فإن رأسه قد دُفِن في كربلاء مع جسده عند عودة سبايا أهل البيت من الشام، بينما اختلف أهل السنة في الموضع الّذي دفن فيه الرأس، فقيل في دمشق، وقيل في كربلاء مع الجسد، وقيل في مكان آخر، فتعدّدت المراقد، وتعذّرت معرفة مدفنه. كان استشهاده يوم العاشر من محرم سنة 61 هجرية الموافق 10 أكتوبر سنة 680م. ويسمى بعاشوراء وقد ظل هذا اليوم يوم حزن وكآبة عند الشيعة.
