ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾವ್ಯ ಭವ್ಯ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದೇ ಬೇಡ, ಅಷ್ಟು ವಿಶಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮೃದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಳೆಗನ್ನಡ, ನಡುಗನ್ನಡ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವ್ಯ ತನ್ನ ನಿರಂತರತೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಯ್ದು ಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಪಂಪ, ರನ್ನ, ಜನ್ನ ಹರಿಹರ, ರಾಘವಾಂಕ, ಕುಮಾರವ್ಯಾಸ, ವಚನಕಾರರು, ಪುರಂದರ-ಕನಕ ದಾಸರ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ, ಕುವೆಂಪು, ಬೇಂದ್ರೆ, ಪುತಿನ, ಅಡಿಗರು, ಕೆಸ್ಸ್ಎನ್ನ್, ಹೆಚೆಸ್ವಿ, ಜಿಎಸ್ಸ್ ಶಿವರುದ್ರಪ್ಪ, ಕಂಬಾರರು, ಸಿದ್ದಲಿಂಗಯ್ಯ ಮುಂತಾದವರಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾವ್ಯ ಸಮೃದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಆಸಕ್ತರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮೊದಲ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಶುರು ಮಾಡುವುದು ಕವಿತೆಯಿಂದಲೇ. ಹದಿಹರೆಯದ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿತೆಯನ್ನು ಬರೆಯದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಾಸಕ್ತರೆ ಇಲ್ಲವೆನ್ನಬೇಕು. ಉತ್ತಮ ಕವಿತೆಗಳ ಗುಚ್ಛವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಕವಿಗೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಬೀಳುವ ನಿರುತ್ಸಾಹದ ಮಾತು 'ಕವಿತೆಗಳ ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆ ಇಲ್ಲಾರೀ... ಕವಿತೆ ಯಾರ್ ಕೊಳ್ತಾರೆ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ?'.
