Description
Automatically backup your SMS, MMS and call history with a separate label in Gmail and Google Calendar.Later you can restore the saved data (except MMS) back to the phone, especially useful when switching to a new device.
IMAP access needs to be manually enabled in Gmail, see the website and FAQ for more information. You can of course use your own IMAP server for backups, giving you full control over your data.
SMS Backup+ is a free open-source project which has been in active development since the early days of Android, completely ad and tracking-free, supported through voluntary donations.

How to install SMS Backup+ APK on Android phone or tablet?
Download SMS Backup+ APK file from ApkClean, then follow these steps:
Update Phone Settings
- Go to your phone Settings page
- Tap Security or Applications (varies with device)
- Check the Unknown Sources box
- Confirm with OK
Go to Downloads
- Open Downloads on your device by going to My Files or Files
- Tap the APK file you downloaded (com.zegoggles.smssync-v1.6.0-BETA2-ApkClean.apk)
- Tap Install when prompted, the APK file you downloaded will be installed on your device.

Q: What is an APK File?
A: Just like Windows (PC) systems use an .exe file for installing software, Android does the same. An APK file is the file format used for installing software on the Android operating system.
Q: If I install an APK from this website, will I be able to update the app from the Play Store?
A: Yes, absolutely. The Play Store installs APKs it downloads from Google's servers, and sideloading from a site like ApkClean.net goes through a very similar process, except you're the one performing the downloading and initiating the installation (sideloading).
As soon as the Play Store finds a version of the app newer than the one you've sideloaded, it will commence an update.

5 ★After experiencing issues earlier this year, it appears that the best SMS backup app is working again. Just make sure to enable IMAP settings in Gmail, and then go to your Google Account to add the app and create a password.
4 ★Used this for years. Nothing wrong with the App. AS for Google API the app is not broken. Google has restricted access to Gmail accounts to apps that are built to read emails only. The dev applied for an exception and was turned down not cause there was something wrong with the app but google is so big it can screw over 5 million users and feel as guilty as your I do when we swat at a fly.
5 ★UPDATE>>> Never-mind.. Got it to work!!! Look for the workaround instructions posted a few times in the other Reviews below...OLD:Very disappointing to find out this app no longer works... I use to use this app on my previous 2 phones backing up messages and call-logs from as far back as 2012... When I got a new phone just over a year or so ago and I didn't install this app on that new phone due to it having backup of sms (albeit an invisible backup) ... Just realizing I missed the convenience of seeing messages in my gmail so I came looking SPECIFICALLY for this app to be greeted with disappointment that it no longer works... 10+ STARS for the time it did though.. Great Job developer.
5 ★I've been using this app for years, and it's definitely one of the essential apps in my Android phones. It's a pity it can't meet Google's updated secure requirement, and after 8th July it can't work anymore as Google emailed me. Plz the developer do not abandon this app!! [Try Davis Scott's method, it's working!]
3 ★I used to use this and loved it, but recently there is some kind of 'Google authentication problem': "Sign in with Google temporarily disabled for this app. This app has not yet been verified by Google in order to use Google sign in". This is the same error for about 2 years already!
5 ★Absolutely 💯 points to this app. Have been using for years. Until recently I noticed I had no backup and Gmail was goofing up just as some reviews have talked about. But thanks to those who figured the fix through Microsoft Edge.. couple of tries and voila I was able to take a backup which I desperately needed to do to reset my phone! I hope the developers find a fix to this!
5 ★Confirming that I can backup my texts again using the custom IMAP settings, which seems like a more reliable solution than the MS Edge one that keeps being posted. Android Police has a great step-by-step guide on how to get this app to backup via IMAP - it's currently the first search result if you use "android police sms backup". Thank you to the developer for building such a helpful app!
4 ★Will this app be fully updated to respect new Google policy? When I attempted to use this earlier this year it seemed there was an authentication issue that still had not been resolved. I used for years until that issue. Hoping developer hasn't abandoned the project. Such a good idea and very useful! Would give 5 stars if kept updated and secure.
1 ★Update 07.17.20 It's not working. No Google authentication again. Edit 8.22.19: Found a work around that others in the reviews mentioned. I downloaded the firefox browser and opened SMS backup and went to connect again. I chose the browser authentication and made sure ti oick the Firefox browser. It took me to page asking to allow full access to SMS backup, which i allowed. Boom! The app works..
5 ★People are disappointed with this app only because it stopped working with Gmail, but there is a work around that works! by downloading the Edge app and making it your default browser then you can login to your Gmail using a browser when you get to that option in the app setup. It will work beautifully as it always has! 10 stars for this app!
3 ★At 1st I gave 1 star due to the app no longer working. I saw a few other post showing a work around by using Microsoft Edge to get pass the google authentication problem. Download edge, login into your email, then log into the sms backup. Changing it to three stars due to having to go through the extra steps now vs the app just being updated. Over all the app does what it is supposed to and messages are easy to search in your email.
4 ★UPDATED: 7.17.20 — Use Microsoft Edge to do the authentication as a workaround instead of Firefox. GL! UPDATED: 4.17.20 -- The app appears to still be working. I had to disable Chrome and use Firefox as the workaround. HTH! 2.3.2020 --- The app stopped working but there is a workaround for it by downloading Mozilla Firefox and doing the authentication through that browser, instead of Chrome. Thanks for the information/review, Chris Miranda (9/15/19). :)
