O Serviço de Neurologia e Neurocirurgia (SNN) foi fundado em novembro de 1989, pelo Dr. Nério Azambuja logo após um grande período dedicado à especialização na área em centros médicos da França, Canadá e Estados Unidos.A expectativa de criar um grande centro de neurologia e neurocirurgia fez com que mais profissionais se integrassem à equipe, motivados e identificados à proposta de oferecer serviços diferenciados, com qualidade, ética médica e tecnologia.
Assim passou a fazer parte do SNN, o Dr. Leonardo Frighetto, com formação em Neurocirurgia Funcional e Radiocirurgia na UCLA, Universidade da Califórnia, Los Angeles, Estados Unidos. Logo depois, uniu-se à equipe o Dr. José Ricardo Vanzin, com formação em Neurorradiologia Intervencionista na Fundação Rothschild – Paris, França, Serviço do Prof. Jacques Moret. Recentemente ingressou à equipe do SNN o Dr. Alan Christmann Fröhlich, com especialização em Medicina Interna no Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição, e residência em Neurologia Clínica no Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre -UFRGS.
Desta forma o SNN tem buscado continuamente, há 19 anos, proporcionar a união de uma equipe altamente qualificada com a melhor tecnologia médica disponível. Entre os avanços que esta equipe trouxe para nossa região, destacam-se: a estereotaxia, a radiocirurgia, a neuroendoscopia, o tratamento endovascular e a neurologia clínica baseada em evidências.
Atualmente, o Serviço absorve grande parte da demanda da especialidade do município e de várias regiões do Rio Grande do Sul além de outros estados.
