Deze app geeft aan de hand van duizenden gebouwen een beeld van de ontwikkeling van Amsterdam tussen 1850 en 1940. Ruim 15.000 afbeeldingen tonen het werk van bekende architecten als Cuypers, Berlage en De Klerk, maar ook van mindere goden zoals de vele negentiende-eeuwse aannemer-architecten. Cultuurgeschiedenis komt ruimschoots aan bod: in de beschrijvingen van de gebouwen en in thema's, waaronder sociale woningbouw, haven, badhuizen, trams, bioscopen, kerken en scholen.Alle belangrijke architectuurstromingen komen langs: van neostijlen via art nouveau, rationalisme en Amsterdamse School tot het Nieuwe Bouwen.

De tweede Gouden Eeuw, zo wordt de periode rond de eeuwwisseling van 1900 wel genoemd. Het was de tijd waarin voor de stad een nieuwe tijd aanbrak, na de stagnatie van de achttiende eeuw en de economische rampspoed van de Franse tijd. Vernieuwingen als trams, telefonie, spoorwegen en elektriciteit maakten schaalvergroting en specialisatie mogelijk.
De stad breidde flink uit: eerst met de negentiende-eeuwse gordel rond de overvolle oude binnenstad, en in de twintigste eeuw verder met nieuwe wijken in Zuid, West en Noord.
De meeste gebouwen uit die tijd staan er nu nog steeds. Ze zijn de stille getuigen van het aanbreken van de moderne tijd.
