Komando Daerah Militer XVII/Cenderawasih merupakan Komando Kewilayahan Pertahanan yang meliputi Provinsi Papua. Pangdam XVII/Cenderawasih yang sekarang menjabat adalah Mayor Jenderal TNI George Elnadus Supit ia menggantikan Mayor Jenderal TNI Hinsa Siburian.[1] Sebelumnya Sejak tahun 1963 hingga 1999, Kodam ini bernama Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih.Namun ketika dilakukan penggabungan Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih dengan Kodam XV/Pattimura, Ambon, maka Kodam yang baru itu berubah nama menjadi Kodam VIII/Trikora yang wilayahnya meliputi Provinsi Irian Jaya (ketika itu) dan Maluku. Pada tahun 1999, Kodam XVI/Pattimura kembali terbentuk di Ambon sementara Kodam di Irian Jaya tetap bernama Kodam XVII/Trikora.
Peresmian kembalinya nama Kodam XVII/Trikora menjadi Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih itu berlangsung di Markas Kodam Cenderawasih, Jayapura, Papua, dipimpin Panglima Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih, Mayjen TNI Zamroni. Dan Bertepatan dengan Hari Ulang Tahun (HUT) ke-62 TNI, Komando Daerah Militer (Kodam) XVII Trikora, Papua kembali bernama Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih seperti sebelum tahun 1999.
