Il s’appelle Birahima. Il a dix ou douze ans, il ne sait pas trop. C’est un Malinké de la Côte d’Ivoire, ça il le sait et il est musulman et croit en son bienfaiteur Allah.
Birahima est le personnage principal de ce roman et aussi le narrateur. C’est à travers ses mots d’enfant souvent maladroits et grossiers que nous connaîtrons tout de son enfance en famille jusqu’à sa vie d’enfant soldat ou small-soldier en anglais.
Inutile de s’aventurer dans des détails fastidieux, il s’agit d’un roman condensé et grave qui frôle la stupeur par tant de cruauté racontée. Nous avons tous une idée des guerres tribales qui ont sévi au Libéria et en Sierra Leone dans les années 90, même avec notre imagination la plus folle, nous sommes très loin de la cruelle réalité.........
