Cette oeuvre s'est imposée comme une référence dans les milieux de l'Islam, pour la connaissance de la vie des messagers de Dieu aussi bien ceux qui sont cités dans le Coran que d'autres.
L'imam Abou al-Fidâ Imad ad-Dîne 'Ismâ'îl 'Ibn 'Omar 'Ibn Kathîr al-Qorâchi al-Basrâwi naquit en 701 h. à Mijdal, un village dans les faubourgs de Bosra, au sud de Damas.
Son père était prédicateur.
Il mourut alors qu'Ibn Kathîr avait quatre ans.
Son frère, le cheikh 'Abd al-Wahâb prit soin de lui et veilla sur son éducation.
Il déménagea à Damas en 706 h. quand 'Ibn Kathîr avait cinq ans.
Il a écrit plusieurs livres dont : La célèbre exégèse connue sous le nom de " Tafsir 'Ibn Kathîr ".
Ce livre compte parmi les meilleurs livres basés sur les diverses techniques d'exégèse.
Le célèbre livre d'histoire connu sous le nom de " al-Bidâya wa an-Nihâya ".
La biographie du prophète as-Sira an-Nabawiyya " sous le nom de " al-Fousoul fi 'Ikhtisân Sirat ar-Rasoul ".
Il mourut à Damas en 774 h.
