ولهذا جاء في صحيح مسلم من حديث عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بن مسعود قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم : " إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ ، حَتَّى مَا يَكُونَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلاَّ ذِرَاعٌ ، فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ ، فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا ، وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ ، حَتَّى مَا يَكُونَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلاَّ ذِرَاعٌ ، فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ ، فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا " ، فالخاتمة هي المقصود ، أن يُختَم للعبد بما يحب الله عز وجل ويرضاه .
وإذا كان الأمر كذلك ، فإن حُسْنَ الخاتمة منوطٌ بمعرفتها ، يعني إحسان العبد خاتمته منوطٌ بمعرفتها ، أن يعرف متى تنتهي حياته حتى يستعد .
وإذا كان ذلك محالاً أن يعلم متى سيموت ، ومتى سينتهي ، كما قال الله تعالى : { إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْأَرْحَامِ وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ مَّاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَداً وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَيِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ } [ لقمان34 ] ، فإذا كان الأمر كذلك ، والإنسان لا يدري متى يموت ، فإنَّ الواجب حينئذ أن يَحْذَرَ صباح مساء ، وليل نهار ، أن يختم له بسوء .
هذا هو عمل الأكياس ، وعمل الصالحين جعلنا الله عز وجل منهم ، وغَفَرَ لنا ذنوبنا ، أنهم يستعدون للخاتمة .
