Сюжет возник среди тюркских народов в средневековье, бытовал в нескольких вариантах среди казахов, алтайцев и других народов, но наибольшее распространение имел у башкир. В основе сюжета эпоса «Кузыйкурпяс и Маянхылу» лежит конфликт, порождённая обычаем заключения брачных союзов между молодыми людьми до их рождения и приводящий к гибели главных персонажей эпического произведения.В стародавние времена у одного озера жил род башкир, а недалеко от них кочевали казахи. И решил башкирский бай выдать свою малую дочь Маянхылу за сына богатого казаха. Сын казаха был неказист на лицо, так как переболел оспой. Когда пришло время знакомить молодых, то Маянхылу, увидев жениха, упала в обморок.
Между тем, у отца Маянхылу работал пастухом добрый молодец из бедной семьи. Маянхылу, полюбив его понимала, что ее отец за бедняка ни за что не отдаст дочь и решила уйти из жизни. Горько плача, она наплакала целое озеро, названное Маян.
Как то Маянхылу ушла в лес с подругами. Там она разбросала сови украшения на поляне и пока подруги их собирали, она вонзила в себя кинжал.
Маян была похоронена, а ночью пришел на ее могилу Кузыйкурпяс и тоже покончил с собой. Его похоронили на этом же кладбище. Деревья над ними сплелись ветвями, как любящие сердца после смерти.
