إن رسالة اتحاد الجامعات العربية هي دعم وتنسيق جهود الجامعات العربية لإعداد الإنسان القادر على خدمة أمته العربية والحفاظ على وحدتها الثقافية والحضارية وتنمية مواردها البشرية بما يحقق تطلعاتها ، وعلى الأخص من خلال:

• توثيق التعاون بين الجامعات العربية وتنسيق جهودها فيما بينها ومع الجامعات والمؤسسات الإقليمية والدولية ذات الصلة وخاصة فيما يساير مستجدات العصر وتقنيات التعليم وأنماطه الحديثة،
• دعم عمليات تطوير أداء الجامعات العربية واستقلالها وتأكيد الحرية البحثية والأكاديمية لأعضاء هيئة التدريس فيها وحماية حقوقهم وتقوية أواصر التعاون بينهم،
• دعم وتحفيز التميز والإبداع وتشجيع الأنشطة الطلابية المشتركة بين الجامعات العربية،
• التعاون لضبط جودة التعليم الجامعي والعالي وضمان نوعيته والسعي لتحقيق الاعتراف المتبادل بالشهادات الصادرة عن الجامعات العربية.
