Galileia foi emancipada sendo composta pelos distritos de São Geraldo do Baixio, Sapucaia do Norte e Sede. Pela lei estadual nº 1.039, de 12 de dezembro de 1953, foram criados os distritos de Central de Santa Helena e Divino das Laranjeiras, a partir de terras de Sapucaia do Norte, sendo desmembrados para formarem o município de Divino das Laranjeiras pela lei estadual nº 2.764, de 30 de dezembro de 1962. Pela lei estadual nº 12.030, de 21 de dezembro de 1995, emancipa-se o distrito de São Geraldo do Baixio e pela lei municipal nº 61, de 21 de novembro de 2006, é criado o distrito de Santa Cruz de Galileia.
