Sarasamuscaya pertama kali diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Jawa kuno dan kemudian diterjemahkan pula ke dalam bahasa Indonesia, merupakan salah satu kitab suci Hindu.Di dalam buku "History of Sanskrit Literature" terdapat keterangan yang menyatakan bahwa Sarasamuscaya ditulis sebagai pujian oleh Ratnakara, sedangkan menurut lontar, Sarasamuscaya itu sendiri menyebut-nyebut nama Wararuci sebagai penulisnya. Bila benar bahwa Wararuci adalah Ratnakara, yang dalam sejarah sastra juga dikenal dengan sebutan Katyayana, adalah salah satu pujangga besar, yang hidup sekitar abad ke-5 SM. Banyak yang menyebut namanya, salah satunya adalah Patanjali, sastrawan raja Wikramaditya.
Meskipun dikatakan sebagai kitab suci Hindu, akan tetapi isi yang terkandung di dalamnya membawa pesan-pesan moral yang bersifat universal bagi seluruh umat manusia.
