আবু দাউদ ইরানের সিস্তানে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন এবং ৮৮৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে বসরায় মারা যান। হাদিস সংকলনের জন্য তিনি ইরাক, মিশর, সিরিয়া, হেজাজ, তিহামাহ, খোরাসান, নিশাপুর ও মার্ভসহ অনেক স্থানে সফর করেছেন। প্রথমে তিনি ফিকহ বিষয়ে আগ্রহী ছিলেন। এ কারণে তিনি হাদিস সংগ্রহে মনোযোগী হন। প্রায় ৫,০০,০০০ হাদিসের মধ্যে তিনি প্রায় ৪,৮০০ হাদিস তার গ্রন্থে সংকলন করেছেন।
