O Tratamento Fora de Domicílio – TFD, instituído pela Portaria SAS nº 55/1999, é o instrumento legal que viabiliza o encaminhamento de pacientes portadores de doenças não tratáveis em seu município/estado de origem a outros municípios/estados que realizem o tratamento necessário.O TFD consiste em uma ajuda de custo ao paciente e, em alguns casos, também ao acompanhante, encaminhado por ordem médica a unidades de saúde de outro município/estado, limitada ao período estritamente necessário ao tratamento e aos recursos orçamentários existentes. As despesas permitidas pelo TFD são aquelas relativas ao transporte aéreo, terrestre e fluvial (ida e volta), e diárias para alimentação e pernoite para paciente e acompanhante.
