Siktemålet med denne boken er å gi en oversikt over de viktigste undersøkelser som utføres ved våre medisinsk-biokjemiske laboratorier,indikasjonene for testene, tolkningen av resultatene, pasientforberedelse og prøvetaking. Vi ser den derfor som et viktig kvalitetssikringstiltak i samarbeidet mellom laboratoriene og de rekvirerende leger.Boken er blitt til på oppfordring fra styret i Norsk forening for medisinsk biokjemi, som nå har rettighetene til teksten. En rekke kolleger med spesialkunnskaper på forskjellige områder har deltatt. Selv om boken ikke har gjennomgått noen konsensusbehandling, skulle innholdet være representativt for den rådende oppfatning blant spesialister i faget.
Boken er ikke ment å være noen lærebok, men først og fremst et praktisk hjelpemiddel til bruk i det daglige arbeid. Siden laboratoriene har forskjellig analyserepertoar, bruker metoder med litt ulike referanseområder, stiller forskjellige krav til prøvevolum osv., er det nødvendig å supplere med informasjon fra samarbeidende laboratorium. Boken vil heller ikke kunne erstatte en faglig dialog med spesialister ved samarbeidslaboratoriet, men vil forhåpentligvis bidra til at denne blir mer målrettet og meningsfull.
