作者：馮夢龍史統散而小說興。始乎周季，盛於唐，而浸淫至於寧，韓非、列禦寇諸人，小說之祖也。《吳越春秋》等書，雖出炎漢，然秦火之青，著述猶希。迨開元以降、而文人乏筆橫矣。若通俗演義．不知何昉？按南宋供奉局，有說話人，如今說書之流。其文必通俗。其作者莫可專。泥馬倦勒，以太上享天下之養，仁壽清暇，喜閱話本，命內璫日進一帙，當意，則以金錢厚酬。於是內璫輩廣求先代奇蹟及閭里新聞，倩人敷演進禦，以怡天顏。然一覽輒置，卒多浮沉內庭，其傳布民間者，什不一二耳。然如《沅江樓》、《雙魚墜記》等類．又皆鄙俚淺薄，齒於弗馨焉。暨施、羅兩公，鼓吹鬍天．而《三國志》、《水滸》、《平妖》諸傳，遂成巨觀。要以韞玉違時，銷熔歲月，非龍見之日所暇也。
皇明文治既鬱，靡流不波，即演義一斑，往往有遠過宋人者。而或以為恨乏唐人風致，謬矣。食桃者不費杏、絺縠讒錦。唯時所適，以唐說律宋，將有以漢說律唐，以春秋戰國說律漢，不至於盡掃羲聖之一畫不止！可若何？太抵唐人選言，入於文心；宋人通谷，諧於里耳。天下之文心少而裡耳多，則小說之資於選言者少，而多資於通俗者多。試今說話人當場描寫，可喜可愕，可悲可涕，可歌可舞；再欲捉刀，再欲下拜，再欲決脰，再欲捐金。怯者勇，淫者貞，薄者敦、頑鈍者汗下。雖小誦《孝經》、《論語》，其感人未必如是之捷且深也。噫！不通俗而能之乎？茂苑野史氏，家藏古今通俗小說甚富，因賈人之請，抽其可以嘉惠裡耳者，凡四十種，畀為一刻。餘顧而樂之，因索筆而弁其首。
