تدور أحداث الرواية حول شخصية (سانتياغو) صياد عجوز متقدم في السن ولكنه لا يزال متمتعا بحيويته ونشاطه. كان لا يزال رابضا في زورقه، وحيدا، ساعيا إلى الصيد في خليج "غولد ستريم". ومضى أكثر من ثمانين يوما ولم يظفر ولو بسمكة واحدة. رافقه في الايام الأربعين الأولى ولد صغير كان بمثابة مساعد له، لكن أهل هذا الأخير أجبروا ولدهما على قطع كل صلة بالصياد. وذهب الغلام يطلب العمل في زورق آخر استطاع صياده أن يصطاد بضع سمكات منذ أول الاسبوع. وأشد ما كان يؤلم الغلام رؤية العجوز راجعا إلى الشاطئ، في مساء كل يوم، وزورقه خال خاوي الوفاض، ولم يكن يملك إلا أن يسرع إليه ليساعده في لملمة حباله، وحمل عدة الصيد وطي الشراع حول الصاري. وكان هذا الشراع يبدو وكأنه علم أبيض يرمز إلى الهزيمة التي طال امدها.وفي يوم خرج إلى البحر لكي يصطاد شيء وإذ علق بخيوطه سمكة كبيرة جدًا حجمها أكبر من حجم قاربه. وبدأ يصارعها فلا يتخلى العجوز عن السمكة ويصارعها عدة أيام وليال وتأخذه بعيدًا عن الشاطئ. ثم يتمكن منها وملأه السرور وربطها في المركب وبدأ رحلة العودة ويلقى في طريق العودة أسماك القرش التي جذبتها رائحة الدم من السمكة وأخذ سانتياجو يصارع أسماك القرش وفي النهاية تنتصر أسماك القرش، فلا يبقى سوى هيكلاً عظميًا، يتركه على الشاطئ، ليكون فرجة للناظرين ومتعة للسائحين فتذهب الجائزة ويبقى المجد.
