حوى أطواق الذهب والفضة سحر من البيان وكنز من المعاني صاغها أبو القاسم محمود بن عمرو بن أحمد الزمخشري جار الله فى مائة مقالة قصيرة الكلمات كثيرة الحكمة عظيمة المعاني وقد سماها أطواق الذهب في المواعظ والخطب " كتاب المقالات".وأما الزمخشري فقد أسمى الكتاب: (النصائح الصغار) وذلك حين رجع إليه في تفسيره: (الكشاف) ونقل منه قطعة من النصيحة رقم (80): (املأ عينيك من زينة هذه الكواكب..إلخ).

"وأرغب إليك أن تجعل عقيدتي وطويتي. وبديهتي ورويتي، وما خط بناني، وخطر بجناني. وكل ما ألّفته من أقوالي وكلمي، وأسلة مقولي على سنّي قلمي. خالصة لك ومن أجلك، مطلوبةً بها نفحات سَجْلِكَ وأن تفيض على هذه المقالات من البركة والقبول، ما يهبها مهب الجنوب والقبول. وأن تحفظ فيها ما أوجبت للجارِ، من حق الذمام. لأنها وجدت في حرمك المطهر، وولدت في حجر بيتك المستّر. وأن تنفع بها منشئِها وقابسها، ومقبسها، ودارسها. إنك مولىكل خير وموليه، وخافض كل شيء ومُعليه. وليس لما سخطته قابل، ولا لرحل حططته حامل."
