Aunque el título completo es el indicado al inicio, es conocida popular y mundialmente como don Quijote de la Mancha.
Se puede decir que esta novela es la obra más destacada de la literatura española y una de las principales de la literatura universal, lo cual convierta a Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra en un referente de la literatura, no solamente en su país de origen, sino también en el resto del mundo.
La segunda parte de esta obra fue publicada en el año, y fue titulada como Segunda parte del ingenioso caballero don Quijote de la Mancha.
El Quijote de 1605 se publicó dividido en cuatro partes, de la siguiente forma: la primera parte abarcaba los capítulos del 1 al 8, la segunda parte abarcaba los capítulos del 9 al 14, la tercera parte abarcaba los capítulos del 15 al 37, y la cuarta y última parta abarcaba los capítulos del 38 al 52.
Al momento de realizarse la publicación del segundo libro, esa división realizada al primero quedó revocada de hecho, ya que las subsiguientes impresiones se refieren a primera y segunda parte, en relación con el primer y segundo libro, respectivamente.
Se puede decir, que Don Quijote de la Mancha, es la primera obra genuinamente desmitificadora de la tradición de los caballeros andantes, por que realiza un tratamiento burlesco de la misma; también representa la primera novela moderna y la primera novela polifónica; y como tal, su éxito produjo una enorme influencia en toda la narrativa del continente europeo.
