حصل على البكالوريوس من كلية العلوم بجامعة الملك سعود بالرياض في 1407هـ، 1987م. وحصل على الماجستير من جامعة جنوب إلينوي في 1990م، ثم الدكتوراة في الاقتصاد من جامعة واشنطن بسانت لويس، بالولايات المتحدة، في 1995م. التحق بمصرف الراجحي في 1995م كرئيسَ مستشارين، ثم في 1998م أصبح مديراً لمركز البحث والتطوير بالمجموعة الشرعية بالمصرف. انضم إلى مجموعة البنك الإسلامي للتنمية في أواخر 1425هـ، 2004م. ويعمل حاليا نائب مدير المعهد الإسلامي للبحوث والتدريب.فيما يلي مجموعة من البحوث والدراسات التي أنجزها الأستاذ الدكتور سامي إبراهيم السويلم :
