علی بن ابی‌طالب مشهور به امام علی(ع) قبل از هجرت امام اول همه مذاهب شیعه، صحابی، راوی، کاتب وحی و چهارمین خلیفه از خلفای راشدین نزد اهل سنت. وی پسرعمو و داماد پیامبر اکرم (ص)، همسر حضرت فاطمه(س)، پدر و جد ۱۱ امام شیعه است. به گفته مورخان شیعه و بسیاری از علمای اهل سنت، در کعبه زاده شد. او نخستین کسی بود که به پیامبر (ص) ایمان آورد و از نظر شیعه، به فرمان خدا و تصریح پیامبر(ص)، جانشین بلافصل رسول خدا (ص) است آیاتی از قرآن کریم بر عصمت وی دلالت دارد. بنابر منابع شیعه و برخی منابع اهل سنت، حدود ۳۰۰ آیه از قرآن کریم، در فضیلت او نازل شده است . هنگامی که قریش قصد کشتن پیامبر (ص) را داشتند، او در بستر پیامبر خوابید تا دشمنان گمراه شوند و بدین طریق پیامبر(ص) مخفیانه هجرت کرد پیامبر (ص) عقد اخوت خود را با وی بست.در همه غزوات پیامبر (ص) - جز جنگ تبوک که به فرمان پیامبر (ص) در مدینه ماند- شرکت داشت و پرافتخارترین فرمانده اسلام بود.
گفته‌اند سررشته بسیاری از علوم مسلمانان، از جمله نحو عربی، کلام، فقه و تفسیر به امام علی (ع) می‌رسد و فرقه‌های گوناگون، سلسله سند خود را بدو می‌رسانند. کتاب معروف نهج البلاغه منتخبی از سخنان و نامه‌های ایشان است. آثار مکتوب بسیاری به زبان‌های مختلف درباره امام علی (ع) نوشته شده است.
