يوم الأربعاء، ٢٨ فبراير عام ١٩٧٩ صدر العدد الأول من المجلة ضمن مشروع عربي وإعلامي شامل أمر بإطلاقه المغفور له الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان مؤسس دولة الإمارات. لم يكن الهدف منه مجلة للأطفال وحسب وإنما مبادرة ثقافية ووطنية تمثل الطفل الإماراتي والعربيوانتشرت المجلة سريعاً وامتدت من الخليج إلى المحيط لتصبح مجلة ( الأولاد والبنات ) في الوطن العربي لاهتمامها بثقافة الطفل وتقديمها محتوىً ترفيهياً وتعليمياً هادفاً يعكس العادات والقيم العربية بلغة سهلة وبسيطة فكسبت ثقة الآباء والأمهات وأصبحت موسوعة ثقافية يتوارثها الأجيال منذ السبيعنات وحتى الآن
