《史記》是由司馬遷撰寫的中國第一部紀傳體通史。記載了上自上古傳說中的黃帝時代，下至漢武帝元狩元年間共3000多年的歷史（哲學、政治、經濟、軍事等）。《史記》最初沒有固定書名，或稱“太史公書”，或稱“太史公傳”，也省稱“太史公”。“史記”本是古代史書通稱，從三國時期開始，“史記”由史書的通稱逐漸成為“太史公書”的專稱。《史記》與後來的《漢書》（班固）、《後漢書》（範曄、司馬彪）、《三國志》（陳壽）合稱“前四史”。劉向等人認為此書“善序事理，辯而不華，質而不俚”。與司馬光的《資治通鑒》並稱“史學雙璧”。
