बैताल पचीसी (वेताल पचीसी या बेताल पच्चीसी (संस्कृत:बेतालपञ्चविंशतिका) पच्चीस कथाओं से युक्त एक ग्रन्थ है। इसके रचयिता बेतालभट्ट बताये जाते हैं जो न्याय के लिये प्रसिद्ध राजा विक्रम के नौ रत्नों में से एक थे। ये कथायें राजा विक्रम की न्याय-शक्ति का बोध कराती हैं। बेताल प्रतिदिन एक कहानी सुनाता है और अन्त में राजा से ऐसा प्रश्न कर देता है कि राजा को उसका उत्तर देना ही पड़ता है। उसने शर्त लगा रखी है कि अगर राजा बोलेगा तो वह उससे रूठकर फिर से पेड़ पर जा लटकेगा। लेकिन यह जानते हुए भी सवाल सामने आने पर राजा से चुप नहीं रहा जाता।Vikram betal stories in hindi.

विक्रमादित्य का जन्म भगवान शिव के वरदान से हुआ था। शिव ने उसका नामकरण जन्म से पहले ही कर दिया था, ऐसी मान्यता है। संभवतया इसी कारण विक्रम ने आजीवन अन्याय का पक्ष नहीं लिया। पिता द्वारा युवराज बनने के प्रस्ताव को विक्रम ने इसीलिए अस्वीकार कर दिया क्योंकि इस पद पर उनके ज्येष्ठ भ्राता भर्तृहरि का अधिकार था। इसे पिता ने अपनी अवज्ञा माना। वे क्रोधित हो उठे। लेकिन विक्रम अपने निश्चय पर अडिग रहे।
यह घटना संकेत थी कि न्याय के लिए अपने सर्वस्व का त्याग करने वाला होगा विक्रम।
यह कहानी महाकवी सोमदेव द्वारा 2500 वर्ष पहले रचित है जिसमे राजा विक्रम और बेताल के बीच हुए वार्ता का संग्रह है. उसी के अनुसार, राजा विक्रम ने बेताल को पच्चीस बार पेड़ से उतार कर ले जाने की कोशिश की थी और बेताल ने हर बार रास्ते में एक नई कहानी राजा विक्रम को सुनाई थी।
