Perbuatan Syirik merupakan kezaliman yang besar berdasarkan firman Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala:Dan (ingatlah) ketika Luqman berkata kepada anaknya, di waktu ia memberi pelajaran kepadanya: "Hai anakku, janganlah kamu mempersekutukan Allah, sesungguhnya mempersekutukan (Allah) adalah benar-benar kezaliman yang besar." (QS. Luqman: 13)
Ada 3 (tiga) sebab munculnya perilaku Syirik, yaitu sebagai berikut:
1. Al jahlu (kebodohan)
2. Dhai’ful iman (lemahnya iman)
3. Taqlid (ikut-ikutan secara membabi-buta)
Hakikat syirik adalah perbuatan mengadakan syarîk (sekutu) bagi Allâh Azza wa Jalla dalam sifat rubuubiyah-Nya.
Barangsiapa yang berbuat syirik maka hapuslah pahala segala amal perbuatannya, berdasarkan firman Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala:
Dan sesungguhnya telah diwahyukan kepadamu (Muhammad) dan kepada (rasul-rasul) yang sebelummu: "Jika kamu mempersekutukan (Allah), niscaya akan hapuslah amalanmu dan tentulah kamu termasuk orang-orang yang merugi. (QS. Az-Zumar: 65)
