ב"האודות הספר-
ספר המידות (נקרא בתחילה "ספר האלף-בית") נכתב על ידי רבי נחמן מברסלב והוא אוסף של מאמרים על המידות השונות, וכן על היבטים שונים בחיי האדם. הספר ערוך לפי ערכים שונים, על פי סדר האלף-בית. בתחילה, היה הספר כתוב בכתב יד אצל רבי נחמן, שלא פרסמו, אולם בשנת תקס"ג (1803) קרא רבי נחמן לרבי נתן שטרנהרץ והקריא לו את רוב הספר על מנת שיכינו לדפוס.
רבי נחמן העריך מאוד את הספר, ואף אמר עליו "הספר הזה הוא ידידי הטוב! זה הספר עשה אותי יהודי!"
הספר מתחלק לשני חלקים, כשהאחד נקרא "אלף בית ישן", ואילו השני נקרא "אלף בית חדש". את חלקו הראשון של הספר כתב רבי נחמן עוד בימי ילדותו, ואילו את החלק השני כתב בתקופה מאוחרת יותר. במהדורה הראשונה נדפסו שני החלקים נפרדים זה מזה, ואולם במהדורה השנייה תיקן זאת רבי נתן, ושני החלקים נדפסו יחדיו, כשבכל ערך יש חלק ראשון וחלק שני.
על פי עדותו של רבי נתן, הספר שהודפס הינו רק אחוז מזערי מתוך כתב היד של רבי נחמן. על ערך רפואה בלבד, מספר רבי נתן, היו לרבי נחמן מאתיים דפים כתובים.

3. הסר ניקוד - הוספנו זאת לתקן טקסט מהופך במכשירים שלא תומכים בניקוד.
4. ישר לימין - הוספנו זאת לתקן טקסט מיושר לשמאל במכשירים מסוימים.
5. מצב לילה - טקסט לבן על גבי רקע שחור, למניעת סנוור וחיסכון בסוללה.
