- 이 사전에 수록할 항목은 다음 사항에 유의하여 선정하였다.
- 원불교의 7대 교서에서 사용하고 있는 용어를 선정하였다.
- 인물은 7대 교서에 등장하는 인물을 수록하되 2013년 6월 말 기준으로 생존인물은 유보하였다.
- 이웃 종교는 불교·유교·도교·기독교와 한국의 신종교 및 기타 세계의 주요 종교와 관련된 기본적인 용어를 선정하였다.
- 철학, 종교학, 사회학 등 관련 인문학에서 중요한 용어와 인물을 선정하였다.
