أثار مَذهب الشيوعية الفلسفي منذ نشأته لغطًا فكريًّا ومناقشات فلسفية مُتعمقة، انقسمت ما بين مؤيد لهذا المذهب يرى فيه الخلاص الإنساني للبشر المُتعَبين والمُستعبَدين بواسطة أصحاب رءوس المال المُستغِلين، ومُعارضٍ يرى فيه مذهبًا غوغائيًا يؤلب الطبقات الاجتماعية على بعضها، ويصنع صراعًا دائمًا بين البشر. وقد رصد العقاد في هذا الكتاب مذهب الشيوعية مستعرضًا المنطلقات الفكرية التي استمد منها «كارل ماركس» نظريته، ويبين وجهة النظر الشيوعية في الاقتصاد ومشكلات المجتمع، كما يناقش نظرة الشيوعية للفنون والآداب، وموقفها المُرتاب والكاره أحيانًا للأديان، وأيضًا محاربتها للشعور بالقومية والانتماء الوطني، حيث اعتبرت ذلك نوعًا من الرجعية. وأخيرًا ناقش العقاد ما في الدين الإسلامي من قيم ومبادئ سامية تغني عن تلك الموجودة بالشيوعية.
