الإمام جعفر ابن محمد الصادق عليهما السلام هو الإمام السادس من الأئمة الإثنا عشر (ع). أبوه الإمام محمد الباقر (ع) و أمه السيدة أم فروة.
عاش الإمام جعفر الصادق (ع) في وقت اشتد به الصراع بين الأمويين و العباسيين لاحتكار السلطة و الذي انتهى بأن آل الحكم إلى العباسيين بعد صراع دامي قضى على الأمويين. في خضم هذا الفراغ السلطوي و بينما كان العباسيون و الأمويون منشغلين بالصراع استغل الإمام الصادق (ع) ذلك لنشر العلوم و إنشاء العلماء كما لم يحصل لأحد من قبله من أهل البيت الطاهرين (ع) و لذلك نرى كتب الحديث نزخر بأحاديثه و علومه.
وُلد الإمام الصادق (ع) في المدينة في السابع عشر من ربيع الأول في السنة الثالثة و الثمانين للهجرة (٧٠٢ ميلادي)و استشهد عن عمر يناهز الخمسة و الستين عاماً في الخامس عشر من شهر شوال في السنة الثامنة و الأربعين بعد المئة للهجرة (765 للميلاد). دُفن في جنة البقيع بجانب والده. استمرت إمامته أربع و ثلاثون سنة.اأشهر ألقابه الصادق و كنيته أبو عبد الله.
