Roman DONJI SVETOVI ima dva narativna toka. U prvom, pratimo sudbinu frustriranog mladog čoveka koji radi kao korektor novina „koje ne čita niko“, njegove ljubavne probleme, kao i one sa majkom (sa kojom živi), njegove poglede na život i događaje kroz koje prolazi. (On traži bolji posao ali ne može da se izbori sa svemoćnom komunističkom birokratijom; zatim, traži način da dođe do stana - ali to će biti moguće samo ako se fiktivno oženi svojom sedamdesetosmogodišnjom gazdaricom, koja umire od raka itd.) Drugi narativni tok prati događaje ispod Zemljine površine, koji se dešavaju u nepoznatoj budućnosti, posle Velikih Plamenova, pionirskog zaposedanja podzemlja, rata za Ujedinjenje Tunela, i uspostavljanja totalitarne antiutopije u tim predelima. Događaji postaju dramatični kada junaci u Tunelima počinju da doživljavaju iskustva koja su neobjašnjiva.Dva narativna toka se susreću i raspliću na kraju knjige. I dok se realni život glavnog junaka, mladog čoveka u totalitarnoj zajednici na Zemlji kreće u negativnom smeru (vidimo da on gubi razum), njegov antipod – mladi junak u „donjim svetovima“ uspeva da se spasi, kao što spasava i grupu „brojeva“ koji su mu najbliži.
Roman koristi postupke karakteristične za modernu književnost i svedoči o izuzetnom talentu svog autora. Spada verovatno u najbolje romane koji su ikada napisani u ovom žanru u ovom delu sveta. Kao književno delo on je svakako bliži Kjerkegoru, Gogolju, Šopenhaueru, Sartru, Kamiju, Selinu – čiju tradiciju nastoji da sledi – negoli Arturu Klarku, Stanislavu Lemu i Ursuli Legvin.
