このアプリは、竹尾デスクダイアリー2021「地球の日めくり」(Earth Chronicle)のAR機能を担うものとして開発されたものです。ただARで表示されるコンテンツ（大陸移動、人類移動、地球温暖化など）は本誌を持たないユーザーでも、このアプリのトップページの'飛び出す地球ボタン'をクリックすることで楽しむことができます。＜竹尾デスクダイアリー2021について＞
竹尾デスクダイアリーは、株式会社竹尾が1959年以来60年以上にわたって制作するデスクダイアリー（非売品）です。2021年版「地球の日めくり」は、現代を生きる私たちの行動と選択が、地球の未来を左右する。私たちの１日１日を、地球進化の歴史の一コマとして捉えてみる。――こうしたコンセプトで企画されましたスケジュール帳で、月毎のカレンダーと地球の歴史に関するテーマ解説がセットになった一冊です。
＜コンテンツとシステムの概要＞
誌面には１月から12月までの12の見開きに、地球と人類の歴史が多次元的な時間のランドスケープとして描かれています。（それぞれ50億年、５億年、5000万年・・とゼロを一つずつ減らした単位で、最後は５年後、50年後に至ります）。ただ壮大なスケールの内容は、文章や写真だけではイメージしにくい事柄も多くあります。
そこで各年代に特徴的なイベントをAR機能で動的に表現しました。たとえば５億年や5000万年のスケールでの大陸移動の様子（超大陸パンゲアの形成と分裂、南極大陸の孤立と地球の寒冷化など）、５万年や5000年スケールでの人類の移動、あるいは氷河時代の激しい気候変動のグラフを、誌面からポップアップするARの３D地球儀やグラフアニメーションで表示するシステムを開発しました。
（この３D地球儀のARシステム自体は、NPO法人ELPが独自に開発し、2013年より国連UNISDRの公式アプリとして採用されたスマホ上で閲覧できる３D地球儀の手法を転用したものです。）
＜本AR機能の目的と意義＞
活字文化と電子メディアの端境に生きる私たちの世代にとって、紙の冊子（アナログメディア）とデジタル情報システムの架橋・統合は避けて通れない文明的課題です。AR・MR技術はこのチャレンジの一助となるはずですが、多くはエンターテイメントや広告の領域で初歩的な実験がなされている段階であり、書物や活字のテキスト空間に蓄積されてきた膨大な知的遺産をAR技術で文字通り「拡張」し「アップグレード」する試みはいまだ未開拓といえます。本誌はそうした時代的な課題解決への一つの実験です。
