Description
Początki muzealnictwa archeologicznego na terenie Poznania sięgają XIX wieku. 23 września 1857 r. Wydział Nauk Historycznych i Moralnych Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk podjął uchwałę o utworzeniu Muzeum Starożytności Polskich i Słowiańskich, które w 1882 roku zmieniło nazwę na Muzeum im. Mielżyńskich. Pod koniec XIX wieku instytucja ta posiadała największe zbiory archeologiczne wśród placówek naukowych działających na terenie ówczesnego państwa pruskiego. W 1923 r. zbiory archeologiczne muzeum połączono ze zbiorami b. Muzeum Prowincjonalnego w Poznaniu (od 1903 r. Kaiser-Friedrich Museum). Powstał wówczas odrębny Dział Przedhistoryczny utworzonego w 1919 r. Muzeum Wielkopolskiego. W roku 1945 założono samodzielne Muzeum Prehistoryczne, przemianowane w 1949 r. na Muzeum Archeologiczne. W 1967 roku Muzeum uzyskało nową siedzibę w Pałacu Górków, zrekonstruowanym po zniszczeniach wojennych. W 2007 roku placówka obchodziła uroczyście 150-lecie swojej działalności.Dwie postaci wywarły silny wpływ na działalność placówki. Pierwszą był prof. Józef Kostrzewski, wieloletni dyrektor, jeden z inicjatorów powołania Uniwersytetu Poznańskiego, odkrywca Biskupina i nauczyciel wielu cenionych archeologów. Drugą był prof. Lech Krzyżaniak, który uczynił muzeum liczącym się na świecie ośrodkiem badań afrykanistycznych.
