ไก่ป่า หรือ ไก่เถื่อน (Red junglefowl) อยู่ในวงศ์ไก่ฟ้าและนกกระทา (Phasianidae) จัดเป็นนกมีขนาดเล็กถึงขนาดกลาง ขนาดลำตัว 46-73 เซนติเมตร พบการกระจายอยู่ในเขตศูนย์สูตรโดยมีการกระจายตั้งแต่ประเทศอินเดียจนถึงเวียดนาม และประเทศจีนตอนใต้ จนไปถึงเกาะต่าง ๆ ในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย จัดเป็นไก่สายพันธุ์ดั้งเดิมและเป็นต้นตระกูลของไก่บ้านที่เลี้ยงกันเป็นสัตว์เศรษฐกิจในปัจจุบันนี้ ไก่ป่าอาศัยตามป่าไผ่ ป่าดิบแล้ง และป่ารอยต่อระหว่างป่าดิบแล้งและป่าเต็งรัง หากินเป็นกลุ่มเล็ก ๆ อยู่ตามพื้นป่า ตัวผู้ไม่ชอบร้องเหมือนตัวเมีย ในฝูงหนึ่งจะมีตัวผู้คุมตัวเมียหลายตัว ตัวผู้มักขันเป็นระยะ ๆ โดยเฉพาะในช่วงตอนเช้าและพลบค่ำ หากินเวลากลางวัน ตามพื้นดิน บินได้ไม่ไกลและไม่สูงมาก ไก่ป่าผสมพันธุ์ในฤดูร้อน สร้างรังอยู่ตามพื้นดินตามกอหญ้า กอไผ่ วางไข่ 6 - 12 ฟอง ระยะฟักไข่ 21 วัน ลูกไก่แรกเกิดมีขนอุยสีเหลืองสลับลายดำทั่วลำตัว เมื่อขนแห้งก็เดินตามแม่ไปหากินได้ทันที โดยทั่วไปไก่ป่าเพศผู้จะเริ่มสืบพันธุ์ได้เมื่ออายุ 2 ปี แต่ในเพศเมียจะสืบพันธุ์ได้ตั้งแต่อายุ 1 ปี โดยมีช่วงการผสมพันธุ์ตั้งแต่เดือนพฤศจิกายน ถึงเดือนพฤษภาคม ในช่วงนี้ไก่ป่าเพศผู้จะมีสีสันสวยงามมากสำหรับในประเทศไทยแล้วพบไก่ป่า 2 ชนิดย่อย คือ
1. ไก่ป่าตุ้มหูขาว (Gallus gallus gallus) มีการกระจายพันธุ์อยู่ทางภาคตะวันออกของไทย, เวียดนาม, ลาว, กัมพูชา
2. ไก่ป่าตุ้มหูแดง (Gallus gallus spadiceus) พบการกระจายพันธุ์ในพม่า, มณฑลยูนาน ในประเทศจีน ในประเทศไทย ยกเว้นทางภาคตะวันออก, ลาวบางส่วน, มาเลเซีย และทางตอนเหนือของเกาะสุมาตรา
