Ngày nay do sự phát triển của công nghệ hiện đại nên trò chơi dần rơi vào quên lãng do đó trẻ em cũng không được trải nghiệm sự độc đáo của trò chơi này. Chỉ cần một bãi đất trống và khoảng 50 viên sỏi là có thể tạo một bàn cờ để chơi Ô ăn quan. Với lối chơi đơn giản nhưng không kém phần lôi cuốn và phải vận dụng trí tuệ để tìm đường đi ăn được nhiều quan nhất đem chiến thắng về bên mình.
Cách chơi:
Với một bàn cờ hình chữ nhât có 10 ô vuông đối xứng nhau và 2 ô khuyết 2 bên. Mỗi ô vuông là 5 viên sỏi tượng trưng cho người Dân và 2 ô khuyết là 2 viên sỏi lớn tượng trưng cho Quan. Người chơi oẳn tù tì để giành quyền đi trước và chọn ô dân bên mình sau đó hoặc rải đều trái hoặc phải lần lượt tới khi gặp một ô trống và một ô dân thì ăn ô dân, ngược lại găp 2 ô trống liên tiếp hoặc ô Quan thì hết quyền đi tiếp. Nếu gặp ô Dân liền kề thì tiếp tục đi tiếp.
Sau khi kết thúc trò chơi, tuỳ cách tính điểm cho mỗi viên sỏi thì người nào nhiều điểm hơn người đó sẽ chiến thắng.
