De Duitse kunstenaar Gunter Demnig (*1947) is in 1994 begonnen aan een monumentaal
project door kleine stenen aan te brengen op het trottoir voor de huizen waar mensen
hebben gewoond die door de nazi’s verdreven, gedeporteerd, vermoord of tot zelfmoord
gedreven zijn, m.n. joden. Op deze stenen staan hun naam, geboortedatum,
deportatiedatum en plaats en datum van overlijden. Gunter Demnig noemt zijn stenen
Stolpersteine of Struikelstenen (Stolpern = struikelen) omdat je erover struikelt met
je hoofd en je hart, en omdat je moet buigen om de tekst te kunnen lezen. Over heel
Europa zijn inmiddels zo’n 61.000 Stolpersteine gelegd op 1200 plaatsen. Zo krijgt ieder
slachtoffer een eigen monument.
In Tilburg zijn tussen 2010 en 2017 achtentwintig steentjes gelegd. Voor 2019 zijn twaalf
nieuwe stenen gepland. Deze wandeling (2018) laat u stil staan bij 17 struikelstenen.
In Tilburg zijn tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in diverse wijken Mariabeelden geplaatst
om bescherming af te smeken tegen de gevaren van de oorlog. Behalve de kapel van
Maria Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Nood, zijn vooral in Tilburg devotietegels geplaatst om
bescherming te vragen tegen oorlogsgeweld of uit dankbaarheid voor de genoten
bescherming van Maria tijdens de oorlog. Deze stenen hebben vaak een beeltenis van
Maria.
Mevr. Hélène van Kempen inventariseerde de devotietegels in Tilburg. Ze liep
daarvoor in 65 wandelingen alle 685 Tilburgse straten binnen de Ringbanen af. In 193
straten zijn devotietegels te vinden, in totaal 463, waarvan wij er een aantal zullen zien. Ze
bevinden zich dus door de hele stad. Ze zijn meestal van terracotta, maar ook vaak prachtig geglazuurd. We zien 10 devotietegels
