Description

Wifi Tracker is a WiFi scanner that can help you see the state of wireless networks in your area.

Ever wanted to sniff out and plot those elusive open WiFi access points?

This wi-fi scanner uses your GPS and WiFi in combination to scan for Wi-Fi hotspots, then saves their location to a file which you can then export a KML file to Google Earth , export to Kismet, or use realtime web uploads to scan and upload in realtime!

Excellent for wardriving in your car, to scan lots of hotspots - it can handle logging the position of thousands of accesspoints without crashing and without posting duplicates.

Quite useful for site surveys (scanning for unsecured Wi Fi access points), or surveying large areas as part of a larger security audit. Has slow down options for scanning whilst walking as well, so you can go for a stroll or a run around a site and the scanner will still work without consuming lots of battery power

It can also be used if you just have a passing interest in seeing what is out there - for example you could take a drive around your city centre and see the state of access points (open, secured, insecure, etc).

The CSV export lets you export the data for manipulation in your favourite spreadsheet editor (Excel, OpenOffice / LibreOffice), or visualise access points using the KML export.

WiFi Tracker also knows about who made the accesspoint that it has found so can detect most accesspoints made by netgear, d-link, 3com, apple, linksys, and so on

If the Torque app is also running on the device, and you have a high-resolution (QStarz 818XT) GPS device connected to that app, then WiFi Tracker will augment it's GPS data automatically with the higher resolution data from Torque

If you have any suggestions, drop me an email using the 'contact developer' link and I'll see what I can do!

Questions & Answers

Q: What is an APK File?

A: Just like Windows (PC) systems use an .exe file for installing software, Android does the same. An APK file is the file format used for installing software on the Android operating system.

Q: If I install an APK from this website, will I be able to update the app from the Play Store?

A: Yes, absolutely. The Play Store installs APKs it downloads from Google's servers, and sideloading from a site like ApkClean.net goes through a very similar process, except you're the one performing the downloading and initiating the installation (sideloading).
As soon as the Play Store finds a version of the app newer than the one you've sideloaded, it will commence an update.

Q: Why ApkClean.net can guarantee APK 100% safe?

A: Whenever someone wants to download an APK file from ApkClean.net, we'll check the corresponding APK file on Google Play and allow user download it directly (of course, we'll cache it on our server). If the APK file does not exist on Google Play, we'll search it in our cache.

Q: What are Android App permissions?

A: Apps require access to certain systems within your device. When you install an application, you are notified of all of the permissions required to run that application.

4 ★Works well, but a couple of points others have mentioned... The app doesn't shut off; I have to go into App Manager and do a force stop to kill it, or it will eat up the battery just sitting there. Also, it would be nice to turn off the map self-centering so I could pan around to see where the WiFi locations are. Other than that, great.
4 ★Great app. Would have given 5 stars but the start/stop toggle is not very intuitive (at least for me). Wish the icon said "start" if it was not scanning yet and "stop" if it was scanning. A magnifying glass doesn't seem as descriptive but I understand it means "search". Other than that, it works as advertised!
3 ★I like the app, but, it has some strange issues. It does not seem to want to exit when I tell it to exit and the phone sometimes goes to sleep when it isn't supposed to (app is told to not go to sleep). If those could be resolved, I'd give it a 4 or 5.
1 ★Does exactly what it says, and very well. But I can't make it stop. If I quit it, it starts up again. If I kill it with task manager, it starts up again. If I shut down my wireless, it starts it up again. Started out annoying, now I'm wondering what it's doing in the background without my permission? VERY unhappy.
3 ★I don't know why the List isn't persistent. The APs just list and de-list in a blink of an eye even when I'm standing still. I walked around my 1/3 acre property and logged 41 APs tho only a dozen or less show up in the list. The csv file has THOUSANDS of entries. Wigle is like this, too. I know practically nothing about the APs in my neighborhood except there are 41 "out there."
4 ★Generally good. Have had a few annoying issues where the WiFi logger just stops updating for no apparent reason. (e.g. Just went out for a drive with a starting database of 1515 APs and 3 APs in range; after a drive to another location, the map reported my position correctly, but still reported the same 3 APs nearby and 1515 APs.) All that aside, a good tool.
3 ★Very annoying that you can not stop the map centralising, prevents you looking at the data you have collected other than next door to you. Otherwise a very good app.
