1. Pengertian I’tikafI’tikaf menurut bahasa artinya berdiam diri dan menetap dalam sesuatu. Sedang pengertian i’tikaf menurut istilah dikalangan para ulama terdapat perbedaan. Al-Hanafiyah (ulama Hanafi) berpendapat i’tikaf adalah berdiam diri di masjid yang biasa dipakai untuk melakukan shalat berjama’ah, dan menurut asy-Syafi’iyyah (ulama Syafi’i) i’tikaf artinya berdiam diri di masjid dengan melaksanakan amalan-amalan tertentu dengan niat karena Allah. Majelis Tarjih dan Tajdid dalam buku Tuntunan Ramadhan menjelaskan I’tikaf adalah aktifitas berdiam diri di masjid dalam satu tempo tertentu dengan melakukan amalan-amalan (ibadah-ibadah) tertentu untuk mengharapkan ridha Allah.
I’tikaf disyariatkan berdasarkan al-Quran dan al-Hadits.
Al-Qur’an surat al-Baqarah (2): 187.
;فَاْلآَنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَابْتَغُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللهُ لَكُمْ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ اْلأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ اْلأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ وَلاَ تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنْتُمْ عَاكِفُونَ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ تِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللهِ فَلاَ تَقْرَبُوهَا كَذَلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللهُ آَيَاتِهِ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ.[البقرة (2): 187]
Artinya: …maka sekarang campurilah mereka dan carilah apa yang ditetapkan Allah untukmu, dan makan minumlah hinggga terang bagimu benang putih dari benang hitam, yaitu fajar. Kemudian sempurnakanlah puasa itu sampai (datang) malam, (tetapi) janganlah kamu campuri mereka itu, sedang kamu beri’tikaf dalam masjid. Itulah larangan Allah, maka jangan kamu mendekatinya. Demikianlah Allah menerangkan ayat-ayat-Nya kepada manusia, supaya mereka bertaqwa.” [QS. al-Baqarah (2):187]
Hadits riwayat Aisyah ra:
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ اْلعَشَرَ اْلأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ أَزْوَاجُهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ. [رواه مسلم]
Artinya: “Bahwa Nabi saw melakukan i’tikaf pada hari kesepuluh terakhir dari bulan Ramadhan, (beliau melakukannya) sejak datang di Madinah sampai beliau wafat, kemudian istri-istri beliau melakukan i’tikaf setelah beliau wafat.” [HR. Muslim]
