香港黃大仙，又名赤松仙子，俗名黃初平，晉朝丹溪人（今浙江義烏市赤岸鎮），以行醫濟世為懷而廣為人知。十五歲時得赤松子指點得道而隱居赤松山。十八歲開始修道，得道後易名赤初平，號黃大仙，故號稱“赤松仙子”。
民間流傳其法力高強，能夠點石成金。傳說因為煉丹得道、羽化登天，而且以“藥方”度人成仙，得到人們的信仰和崇祀。
據說黃大仙的簽文十分靈驗，有口皆碑，所以許多善信都遠道而來一求指點迷津。若問前程，趨吉避凶，到大仙廟上頭炷香，會是不錯的選擇。每逢年三十晚，很多名善信帶著香燭祭品，你擠我擁，到黃大仙廟霸頭位，爭上頭炷香，取其好意頭，來年可以事事順境，得心應手，衰運也轉為好運。
